The main character, Troy Maxson grew up a talented baseball player in a time when African Americans couldn't play for the major leagues.  After topping out in the Negro Leagues, he retires to become a garbage man.  17 years later his son, Cory, comes a long saying he has a football scholarship and an opportunity to go to college.  Times have changed, it is now the 1960's, a time when being black in America has different implications.  Meanwhile, Troy tries to escape the mundane life of a garbageman by having an affair.  When his wife, Rose, finds out he's fathered a child, its now her struggle to redefine her family.  As Rose and Cory embrace the changing family dynamics of the 1960's, Troy is left with all of the responsibility and none of the respect.  Come watch as this family comes to terms with the tumultuous 1960's, with a changing America, and with each other.

Theatre At Hattiesburg High School
Hattiesburg High School enjoys a rich tradition of theatre activities through a school and community wide commitment to the arts. Staging a minimum of three major productions a year as practical training for aspiring actors and technicians, Hattiesburg High Theatre has mounted world premieres of FREEDOM SUMMER and RAISING STALLIONS along with Mississippi premieres of The Laramie Project, The GUYS, INTO THE WOODS and CITY OF ANGELS. Hattiesburg High Theatre has represented the state four times at the Southeastern Theatre conference, twice recognized as First Alternate for Best Production. With former seasons including fully realized productions of CHICAGO – the musical, A STREETCAR NAMES DESIRE, RAISIN IN THE SUN, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, THE WOMEN, THE DINING ROOM, RECKLESS, PURLIE VICTORIOUS and more, Hattiesburg High Theatre has performed across the South East and at the world’s largest theatrical gathering, the acclaimed International Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
What sets us apart from some high school theatre departments is our desire to instill professional ethics and standards in our students. Living in the same city as a major university, a college, and a number of community theatre groups, our students often come to us “highly seasoned” and eager to practice their craft.
Our mission is not just to showcase our performers via quality shows, but also to foster an appreciation for live theatre. We serve those who will go on to professional careers, but of utmost importance to us is the student for whom the high school experiences is the his or her total of exposure to the arts.
The National Standards for Arts Education Task Force puts it best in its publication, What every Young American Should Know and Be able To Do in the Arts, “No one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts.”
